Model helicopters are becoming more and more popular. Many adults, known as “big kids” feel the urge to try their flying experience with these rather pricy toys. Many military styles including the Huey, Blackhawk, Chinnok, among others are the most sought model helicopters on the market, partly due to the wars in which the United States is involved.
Many people who become involved in collecting or playing with these model helicopters either have loved ones in the armed forces or have participated themselves in serving for their country. They are popular, due to the diverse flying procedures that the electric batteries provide. At one time, these electric sourced helicopters were used mostly inside; however since they are now made in larger sizes, they can be flown outside.
- Nitro
Nitro powered helicopters, better known as “glow fuel” sourced copters, come in various sizes of 15, 30, 50, 60, and 90. Their average fight times range from 7 – 14 minutes, depending upon the size of engines.
- Gas turbine
Those helicopters which are powered by gas turbines are wonderful flying machines, but are expensive. Gas turbine is usually used for the larger heavier helicopters.

Model helicopters are made of plastic, aluminum, fiberglass, and carbon fiber. It is important that you learn on plastic, aluminum, or fiberglass. Carbon fiber copters are very expensive, so should be flown after you have had experience, so as not to damage or wreck this more costly model. Various materials are used for different sizes, pertaining to these model helicopters. For example, plastic is used for those smaller models, whereas fiberglass is a material that is used for medium to large sized copters. Carbon fiber is used for all sizes, but its high costs limit many individuals from purchasing carbon fiber helicopters.
